It was the second time he had collapsed after a training run.

The Army have launched an investigation into the incidents but insisted that normal safety procedures were followed.

Graham, of Edinburgh, had been taking part in the march as part of preparations for a full Combat Fitness Test.

During the test, soldiers have to yomp eight miles in under two hours, carrying 36lbs of equipment and a rifle.

An Army spokesman said: "Officer cadet Holmes was given first aid by a medic medic: see alfalfa.  at the scene and was then taken to hospital by ambulance. His condition deteriorated and he died in the early hours of yesterday.

"The training instructors are always very careful and the cadets carry water with them during these marches.

"They have got to take a certain amount of water stops, bearing in mind the heat and conditions."

He said soldiers sometimes failed to recognise the symptoms of heat exhaustion because they were pushing themselves so hard to finish the test.

He added: "It's very unfortunate.

"But it is not as if the lads were necessarily being pushed far above what they should be."

Graham's parents, Frances and Judith, rushed to his bedside at Frimley Park Hospital Frimley Park Hospital is a large, 700-bed NHS hospital in Frimley, Surrey, part of the Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Yesterday, they were being comforted by Army welfare officers.

Sandhurst spokesman Major Iain Park-Weir paid tribute to Graham, saying: "He was a good cadet, a very worthwhile cadet.

"It's an absolute tragedy and a great loss to the academy."

Graham was educated at George Watson's College George Watson's College is a leading co-educational independent day school in Scotland, situated on Colinton Road, in the Merchiston area of Scotland's capital city Edinburgh. , Edinburgh, and Dundee University, where he studied engineering.

The commanding officer of the university's Officer Training Corps, Colonel Julian Lyne- Pirkis, said that Graham would have had to pass two medicals - one to get into the training corps and another for Sandhurst.

He said his entry to Sandhurst was delayed for a year because of a muscular muscular /mus·cu·lar/ (mus´ku-lar)

Colonel Lyne-Pirkis added: "He worked hard and had a bright future in front of him.

"It's a complete and totally unexpected tragedy."

Frank Gerstenberg, principal of George Watson's, said: "Graham was an excellent pupil, a member of the first- 15 rugby team and well respected by staff and pupils.

"Our sympathy goes out to his family."

The Army said that the second Sandhurst casualty was "stable" in hospital. The 22- year-old foreign student was taken ill within hours of Graham's death.

But the Sandhurst spokesman said that the casualty was in a different section of the college and the two incidents were unrelated.

Sandhurst is home to as many as 800 officer cadets each year. They are each given a year's intensive training.
