CADE`S FINALE: A NOT-SO-ROSY FINISH TO MCNOWN'S CAREER.

Byline: Billy Witz

In this what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world, where one day you're the toast of the town and the next day you're just toast, the last impression is often the lasting impression.

It is ironic then that the career of Cade McNown Cade McNown (born January 12 1977 in Portland, Oregon) is a quarterback who played in the National Football League.  history, came to an end that was most un-McNownlike. That is to say the Bruins' money player came up a few coins short.

The numbers were fine - his 390 yards passing were the fourth most in Rose Bowl history - but as numbers have rarely defined McNown's successes, they didn't reveal his shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw.

The clutch, game-turning plays that McNown has made his signature in his four years were absent. Worse yet, they were made in Wisconsin's favor.

The Wisconsin crowd forced him to burn timeouts twice in the second half.

Then, with the Bruins perched at midfield and trailing by a touchdown with nearly two minutes left, they failed to gain even a first down. On fourth down, with the Bruins season in his hands, McNown was sacked by Wendell Bryant Wendell Bryant (born September 12, 1980 in St. Louis, Missouri) is a former American football defensive tackle for the Arizona Cardinals.

.

``I hate to lose,'' he said later. ``For it to turn out this way is frustrating. The last couple of games have been disappointing. I wish we could have played a little better, but sometimes things aren't going to go your way.''

McNown threw 1,250 passes in his career and the first one he'd like back is one he floated down the right sideline intended for Foster. Fletcher trailed Foster but he had help over the top from safety Jason Doering. Fletcher caught the underthrown ball and raced down the sideline untouched to put Wisconsin ahead 38-28 with 14:08 to play.

``It was a bad decision in retrospect,'' said McNown, who was 19 of 34 passing with two touchdowns on the day. ``I shouldn't have thrown the ball. I kind of thought (Foster) would come back. He didn't do that, but he's not wrong for not doing that.''

Just as costly was the fumble at the goal line. The Bruins, trailing 31-21, were planted at the Wisconsin 6 after McNown's 44-yard bomb to Danny Farmer Danny Farmer, born 1977, is a former National Football League and University of California, Los Angeles wide receiver.[1] In 2000, he was drafted in the fourth round (103) by the Pittsburgh Steelers. .

The Wisconsin crowd at the north end was so loud it forced McNown to call timeout. The play that was called was changed twice, but Foster and several others didn't hear the second change.

McNown tossed the ball to Foster, but the freshman was expecting a handoff Switching a cellular phone transmission from one cell to another as a mobile user moves into a new cellular area.
