CABLE TELEVISION NETWORK OF NEW JERSEY: GOV. FLORIO EMPHASIZED HIS POSITION SUPPORTING MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCING FOR CONVICTED CRIMINALS

TRENTON, N.J., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Governor Jim Florio reiterated his support for mandatory minimum sentencing for convicted criminals in New Jersey. His comments were made on this week's edition of CTN's "State of the State."
"We're not saying we are just going to keep building prisons to put people away," Florio stated. "What we are saying is when people commit offenses, there should be some certainty with regard to the sentence they are going to have and we should have adequate prison space. If the criminal justice system is not enforced in an even handed certain way, in terms of the sentencing, people lose confidence in the system."
The Democratic governor stressed his differences on the issues with his gubernatorial opponent, Republican Christie Whitman. While Whitman does not favor repeal of any of the sentencing statutes currently on the books, she believes the laws are not working and opposes mandatory sentencing on any additional crimes.
Florio charged Whitman's position is "out of step with the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state."
"To describe mandatory minimum sentences, as Mrs. Whitman did, as pandering in some way I think just says that someone is out of step with the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state," Florio said.
"We have to start thinking about the victims. We have to start putting some emphasis on the scales of justice being balanced," Florio said. "For a very long time we have focused exclusively and appropriately on due process for the defendants, but victims and the families of victims are likewise entitled to due process."
This edition of "State of the State" will air on CTN, Wednesday, Aug. 4, and again on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 9 p.m. Check your local listings for the CTN channel in your area.
