CABLE & WIRELESS REORGANIZES NORTH AMERICAN OPERATION

VIENNA, Va., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Cable & Wireless, Inc. ("CWI"), the nation's largest long distance company exclusively serving businesses, announced today the reorganization of the company's North American operation from a functional organization to a business unit structure effective immediately.
According to Gabe Battista, CWI's president and chief operating officer, the new structure establishes three new business units which will focus on maintaining existing business and developing new business in the U.S. among the following unique customer segments: 1) international and corporate customers, 2) small and medium-sized business customers, and 3) customers with specialized messaging requirements.
"The decision to reorganize CWI is reflective of a dynamic telecommunications marketplace which has produced customers that need distinctly different levels of service and support to manage their communications and, ultimately their businesses, more profitably," said Battista. "Since company size and industry type usually determine the way the telecommunications function will be staffed and managed, the new CWI organization establishes separate business units designed to reflect customer requirements that differ by market segment."
Battista added that the new structure will align CWI with Cable & Wireless business divisions in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom which have also structured their operating units by customer segments to provide seamless customer support internationally.
Several management changes were made to support the new organizational structure. Chuck Gibney, formerly senior vice president-sales and customer service, has been appointed senior vice president and general manager of the international and corporate business unit. Bill Coyne, formerly vice president-general business sales, has been appointed to the position of senior vice president and general manager of the general business organization. Tom Malone, formerly vice president-messaging services, has been appointed to the position of vice president and general manager of the messaging business unit.
Three functional departments will comprise the centralized service and support portion of the new organization. Joe Basile will serve as senior vice president of the network and systems operations department. Gian Dilawari will serve as senior vice president of the engineering and information systems department. John Conron will serve as vice president of the finance and alternate channels department
Cable & Wireless, Inc. is owned by Cable and Wireless plc (NYSE: CWP), one of the world's leading international telecommunications companies. Cable & Wireless Inc. has been operational in the U.S. since 1975, and provides a wide range of domestic and international public and private networking services exclusively to businesses.
