FAILED TO IMPROVE PHYSIOLOGIC RESPONSE AND PATIENT SATISFACTION AFTER INTERVENTION. Janine Serebro, BA, Michael R. Jaff, DO, Julie Oliver, Augusto D. Pichard, MD, and Hongsheng Wu, PhD. Washington Cardiology Center, Vascular Lab, Washington, DC.

Coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was done on 60 patients who were prospectively randomized to guided imagery (GI), music therapy (MT) or no preprocedure (control, C). Systolic blood pressure Systolic blood pressure
Blood pressure when the heart contracts (beats).

Mentioned in: Hypertension
(SBP SBP Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, see there ), diastolic blood pressure Diastolic blood pressure
Blood pressure when the heart is resting between beats.

(DBP), heart rate (FIR), length of hospital stay (LOS), and procedure recovery time (PRT) were prospectively collected. A statistically validated assessment tool, the Spielberger Self-Rating State-Trait Anxiety Scale, was administered 1 hour before and the morning after the PTCA. Although GI mildly improved DBP after PTCA, it did not shorten the total time spent in the hospital or the recovery time. GI and MT also failed to improve patient satisfaction with PTCA since patients in these groups were more worried and less secure than patients in the control group. This may be due to the fact that only patients experienced in meditation obtain the full benefits from this relaxation method. Further study is warranted.
