As Greenville Hospital System's health care facility expanded, adding new facilities, functions, and applications, the hospital gradually outgrew out·grew v. Past tense of outgrow. its environment. Seeking a more end-user accommodating computer system, Greenville Hospital's IT executives sought to implement several client/server applications throughout the facility. In doing so, it quickly became obvious that better system management was critical to the success of the project. "Our application suite was moving to a client/server world, operations couldn't keep up and we couldn't add people due to fiscal constraints," said Philip Martin Philip Martin can be:
With a tight budget, Martin, Operations Director William "Tip" Jones and Chief Information Officer Nick Dierckman concluded that the hospital system could not afford to maintain the status quo--higher staffing costs and unpredictable, but expensive problems would inevitably result. "If you start losing reports, or causing outages, there's no telling how much that's going to cost, not to mention the health care ramifications ramifications npl → Auswirkungen pl of losing data," said Martin. "The basic reason we chose CA-Unicenter was the integration of all the functions we needed--it was already there," said Martin. "We could have bought other systems to perform those functions, but then it would have been our responsibility to put them all together, and we didn't have the time or people to do that." Other factors in the decision were Greenville Hospital System's long-standing relationship with CA, whose software runs the facility's mainframes, as well as the desire of the IT staff to have mainframe-quality tools available in the new client/server environment A networking environment that is made up of clients and servers running applications designed for client/server architecture. See client/server. . "A lot of things we were doing on the mainframes, such as scheduling, event notification Event notification is a term used in conjunction with communications software for linking applications that generate small messages (the "events") to applications that monitor the associated conditions and may take actions triggered by events. and print dispatching, weren't there in the distributed world," said Martin. "Since we knew what could be done, we tried to get there with our client/server systems, too." Dierckman said CA-Unicenter will enable the hospital system's client/server networks to access the high capacity centralized laser-printing facility through the mainframe, saving the expense of replicating this capability on all platforms. Because the business of health care requires an increasing degree of on-line documentation by doctors and staff, Dierckman said, a major project will be to run the practice management system, supporting physicians' practices and the medical center clinics.
