CA-Paradigm Dramatically Improves Worker Productivity At Washington National Corp.

Major Insurance Holding Company Entrusts CA Software To Keep Enterprise Up And Running

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that CA-Paradigm software has dramatically boosted the availability of computing systems at Washington National Corp. (WNC), resulting in a 15 percent increase in worker productivity. CA-Paradigm, which allows businesses to track and resolve distributed computing systems problems, replaced a proprietary Lotus Notes-based application at the Lincolnshire, Ill.-based insurance holding company.

WNC's need for CA-Paradigm arose from the proliferation of departmental and division-level networks and client/server systems. While the systems freed users from having to depend on the company's data center, they also bypassed central support. In time, the problems and costs involved with managing and maintaining the systems independently began to outweigh the advantages of flexibility and quick access.

The firm initially hired IBM's Lotus Development Group to create a system based on Lotus Notes, but the project was discontinued when the company discovered CA-Paradigm.

"CA-Paradigm fit perfectly with our own business strategies, so we decided not to pursue our home-grown version," said Wade Brown, chief information officer of WNC's Information Center. "We were very pleased with CA-Paradigm out of the chute, and we're even more excited about the long-term capabilities."

With CA-Paradigm, the Information Center now supports more than 1,000 users nationwide. Problems are handled by a single, three-person help desk, which has eight technicians on call. WNC is currently using CA-Paradigm to record problems in a log, which is used by technicians to track the problems until they are solved. In the future, WNC will add other CA-Paradigm features to further improve its customer-service capabilities.

"One of the things we intend to take full advantage of is CA-Paradigm's Web Browser capability," said Mingus. "That will let our end-users get into CA-Paradigm to see the status of their own problems. We also plan to link CA-Paradigm to other systems. So when we have a problem, whether it's a server running out of disk space or the air conditioning system going down, it will be electronically reported."
