ARCserve 6.5 also includes an end-to-end encryption Continuous protection of the confidentiality and integrity of transmitted information by encrypting it at the origin and decrypting at its destination. For example, a virtual private network (VPN) uses end-to-end encryption. Contrast with link encryption.  feature, providing additional security. Administrators can encrypt and password-protect data to ensure privacy as data is transferred over the network or stored. Users can specify encryption for specific jobs and can prevent access without an encryption key.

"As a clearinghouse for medical data and a liaison to the health insurance industry, data is our company's stock-in-trade," said Sam Chen, system administrator for the Halley Exchange, a leading healthcare/EDI provider headquartered in Elgin, IL. "ARCserve 6.5 provides us with the widest possible array of features for ensuring the availability of this data, tying together functions for encryption, data migration, and easy-to-use disaster recovery. In addition, ARCserve's centralized administration and management features enable us to back up data across a complex network simply and easily."

ARCserve 6.5 and its options can be installed remotely from a single point on the network to multiple servers and workstations simultaneously. Single point parallel installation enables administrators to deploy storage management over the enterprise efficiently.

New and Enhanced Options

ARCserve 6.5's powerful new options -including mainframe backup, automated data migration, remote disaster recovery, online image backup and optical library support-give enterprise users unparalleled flexibility and performance in the management of storage and recovery operations Operations conducted to search for, locate, identify, rescue, and return personnel, sensitive equipment, or items critical to national security. .

Mainframe Backup Option-allows ARCserve to back up client/server data to MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) Introduced in 1974, the primary operating system used with IBM mainframes (the others are VM and DOS/VSE). MVS is a batch processing-oriented operating system that manages large amounts of memory and disk space.  systems, eliminating the transmission of duplicate data and compressing data locally prior to transmission.

Data Migration Option-automatically migrates and de-migrates data between distributed storage Storing data in multiple computers or in computers that are geographically dispersed. This was an early term for storage that evolved into SANs and storage virtualization. See SAN and storage virtualization.  devices -disk, optical and tape- based on policies set by the administrator. This new option also allows management of heterogeneous distributed storage devices. Tight integration with ARCserve and its Disaster Recovery Option ensure full recoverability of migrated data.

Optical Library Option-enables ARCserve to back up data to single- or multiple-drive optical libraries, providing "lights out" automation and allowing customers to archive their data indefinitely.

Backup Agents For OpenIngres and Informix-provides online backup Using the Web to store copies of data for backup. There are numerous providers on the Internet that charge for storage, and fees are typically based on capacity. Online backup services provide offsite backup, which is essential for disaster recovery. See backup types.  support for OpenIngres and Informix databases.

Remote Disaster Recovery Option 2.0-provides comprehensive end-to-end disaster recovery by allowing users to restore data on remote Windows NT workstations and servers that don't have a locally attached Refers to disks, printers and other peripheral devices that are connected directly to a computer via USB or FireWire.  Information for all disaster recovery clients can now be centrally stored on the ARCserve server, eliminating the need to create or manage boot disks for remote systems. The option also extends support to removable tape devices, libraries, and devices configured for RAID.

Image Option 2.0-delivers ultra-high speed image backup of Windows NT volumes by writing large blocks of data to tape, rather than backing up file-by-file. This option preserves data integrity and consistency by backing up volumes as they are being accessed by applications.

RAID Option 2.0 with Tape Library Support-supports concurrent streaming of data to a set of tape drives and provides striping Interleaving or multiplexing data to increase speed. See disk striping.

This option also supports software tape RAID levels 0, 1 and 5 across multiple tape libraries and within multiple-drive libraries. Administrators can create a single, logical, high performance device with virtually unlimited media capacity.

. "One of the major features CA incorporated into ARCserve 6.5 is the new Tape Library Option that provides the ability to create a 'virtual' library of up to 16 Compaq DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  libraries with a total of 32 drives. This can provide users with up to 3.6 terabytes of unattended backup and restore capacity. Phenomenal performance like this supports our goal of delivering easy-to-manage, high-performance, high-capacity backup for business-critical environments throughout an enterprise."

Built on Unicenter TNG Framework

Adding a new level of manageability, ARCserve 6.5 is built on and includes the Unicenter TNG Framework, CA's industry-leading enterprise management framework. With the preconfigured Set up ahead of time. It implies that the device or software application has been modified to suit the customer or situation. See ghosting server.  backup "Business Process View," administrators can simplify their view of storage and related management components.

The Unicenter TNG Framework also provides for automatic discovery of network, storage and ARCserve's distributed components in the enterprise. From the Unicenter TNG Framework's Real-World Interface, administrators can launch the ARCserve console and Wizards for backup, restore, job status, and device management. The Unicenter TNG Framework's console enables administrators to manage all storage assets from a central point.

"Market research shows that ARCserve for Windows NT has become the leading Windows NT backup product of choice for both the small business and enterprise markets," said T.M. Administrators can now use the standard built-in ARCserve database or an ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  database such as Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System.  for storing backup information and enhancing availability. The use of standard ODBC databases provides administrators with advanced reporting capabilities and a highly scalable repository.

ARCserve 6.5 enables systems administrators to replicate multiple ARCserve databases in a single, centralized database. A Windows NT server can be designated as the central ARCserve server and stores a replicated copy of the information from all the ARCserve databases across the enterprise. Administrators can set enterprise-wide backup and media policies, generate centralized reports for all ARCserve servers, and access backup databases in case of local database corruption or loss.
