Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today began shipping a specialized Backup Agent for GroupWise, Novell's industry-leading messaging/groupware platform. The Backup Agent, which is an option for CA's ARCserve for NetWare, allows users to back up their GroupWise messaging system without having to take it off-line.

This unique live backup capability enables users to maintain true "24x7" GroupWise operation and access without risking data integrity and system stability or employing complex, resource-intensive replication methods.

Operating in a client/server configuration, ARCserve's Backup Agent for GroupWise resides on a GroupWise server, enabling ARCserve to back up data without interrupting server functions or user access. During the message delivery process, GroupWise updates several database files sequentially. The Backup Agent ensures a clean backup of GroupWise database files, maintaining full data integrity and recoverability. The Agent backs up both the domain and all GroupWise post office directories simultaneously, further ensuring comprehensive data protection and business continuity.
