CA Building Owners Show Increasing Commitment To Producing Their Own Power; Private Business and Government Agencies Embrace Distributed Generation.

Business Editors & Energy Writers

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2002

Producing power onsite is part of a growing trend referred to as Distributed Generation Distributed generation generates electricity from many small energy sources. It has also been called also called on-site generation, dispersed generation, embedded generation, decentralized generation, decentralized energy or , where power is produced at or near the end-user. Whether the justification is cost-effectiveness or concern over the quality of power received when relying solely on an aging transmission grid, building owners and managers across a spectrum of market sectors are turning to companies that are capable of providing increased independence when it comes to meeting energy needs.

One of the companies leading this new industry, RealEnergy, Inc., has either operating or under construction, 32 such onsite energy systems in CA. Those 32 systems will produce twenty megawatts of electricity, which is the equivalent of the amount of electricity needed to power 15,000 to 20,000 average-sized homes. RealEnergy has installed systems for large building owners and real estate portfolio managers like Arden Realty realty n. a short form of "real estate." (See: real estate)

, CalPERS, RREEF Funds, CommonWealth Partners, Transwestern Investment Company and DivcoWest Properties. In April alone, RealEnergy signed contracts with four new clients that own or manage a combined 1,500,000 square feet of California commercial real estate. Their systems are not back-up generators, but efficient mini-power plants that produce a significant part of a building's power on a daily basis. Most buildings using onsite generation produce approximately half of their power, while the remaining power continues to come from the public grid.

"Additionally, we have developed a financial structure that can put these CHP systems into a building at literally no cost to the owner." RealEnergy has also expanded their focus by opening offices in New York.

Cashdan, a passionate believer in the expanding role of onsite power generation as a viable solution for helping to solve the nation's long term power problems, is equally strong in his belief that these solutions also have to be environmentally sensitive. "Our commitment is to only provide ultra-efficient energy systems that reduce pollution and energy usage while taking some of the peak load off the public grid, allowing more power to be available to the surrounding neighborhood," said Cashdan.
