C.V. TURNS OVER A NEW LEAF FALCONS COMMIT JUST FIVE TURNOVERS IN ROUT OF PALMDALE CRESCENTA VALLEY 61, PALMDALE 41.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

LA CRESCENTA - The passes were crisp, without hesitation. The execution almost flawless.

Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  High's girls' basketball team has learned how to hold onto the ball, surrendering just five turnovers Thursday night. That turned out to be a big factor in a 61-41 victory over visiting Palmdale in a Southern Section Division I-AA playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta (17-9) advances to Saturday's second round at Oxnard. Palmdale, also nicknamed the Falcons, finished its season 14-14.

Sloppy play contributed to Crescenta Valley's slow start. One of the area's top teams in recent years, C.V. rallied down the stretch to tie Pasadena for second place in the Pacific League.

``I think we started coming together more as a team. We got to know each other better and that built a little more confidence,'' said senior guard Sinnamonn Garrett, who had game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds.

``Every game we're trying to be more focused. This is (the section playoffs). You better bring your A-game every night.''

Crescenta Valley scored high marks on both ends of the floor. Palmdale couldn't get off many high-percentage shots in the first half, managing just 11 points.

``We were a turnover machine,'' Freemon said. ``We're protecting the ball a lot better now . . . We have only three seniors and we're getting a lot better with our chemistry. We were a little impatient early in the season.''

It helps to have a star such as Garrett, who reached her season scoring average playing in front of her future New Mexico State coach.

Garrett's first points came on two foul shots with 6:27 left in the first half. That started a 16-4 spurt spurt Vox populi A surge or abrupt ↑ in the size or speed of a thing. ``Nothing's easy,'' Garrett said, referring to Crescenta Valley's knack for playing close games after a rare blowout. ``I think everybody has abetter understanding of their roles now. And that's helped us become a better team.''
