C.V.'S OLSON SHINES IN SHUTOUT OF YUCAIPA : CRESCENTA VALLEY 3, YUCAIPA 0.

Byline: Chris Branam Daily News Staff Writer

It was only a 45-foot sprint. But it was the grittiest run in Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. The Falcons, who have advanced through the playoffs with solid pitching and defense, used the same formula against the Thunderbirds (19-11) - but with a twist.

Olson (10-1) strained his back fielding a ground ball against Palmdale on Friday and pitched with a heavy brace. He walked gingerly to the mound in between innings and also had a hard time fielding ground balls. He described the feeling in his back as ``sore, stinging pain.''

``It went well until the last couple innings,'' Olson said. ``It was really bothering me.''

He looked like he would be knocked from the game in the fifth, when the Thunderbirds put runners on first and second with two outs. Matt Teahen hit a grounder that second baseman Mark McCauley fielded just on the lip of the grass in right field.

``I thought I was going to have to sprint over there myself,'' McCauley said. ``(Olson) sacrificed whatever it took in his body.''

Olson caught McCauley's throw and beat Teahen to the bag by a half-step.

Crescenta Valley coach Phil Torres, who has guided the Falcons to the final in just his second season, praised Olson's grit.

``That's just saying, `I want to win the ballgame and get over there,' '' Torres said.

Olson pitched 5-1/3 innings before being relieved by Josh Herman with runners on first and second in the sixth. On his first pitch, Herman induced Nick Oldenorf to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Falcons scored three times in the first off Yucaipa starter Johnny Torres, who dropped to 10-2. Torres threw a wild pitch to score McCauley with the first run, and Ryan McKnight had a sacrifice fly and John Barbara an RBI RBI
