 C.E. ZEIGLER, SR. ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
 GASTONIA, N.C., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Charles E. Zeigler, Sr., will


retire from active management as chairman of Public Service Company of North Carolina, Incorporated (NASDAQ-NMS: PSNC) at the company's annual shareholder meeting on Jan. 31, 1992. Although he will step down from the day-to-day operation of the company, Zeigler will continue to serve the utility as chairman of the board of directors.
 Zeigler joined the local distribution company in 1946 as a management trainee. Except for the time when he was recalled to serve as an Air Force officer during the Korean Conflict, Zeigler built his career with the utility. Working his way up through the business, Zeigler possesses first-hand knowledge of all aspects of Public Service. In 1957 he was promoted to executive vice president and coordinated the accounting, engineering, and sales departments. He was named president and chief executive officer in 1973 and elected chairman in 1982.
 Active in the American Gas Association, Zeigler served on its board of directors from 1982 until 1986. He chaired and served on various committees for this national association. In 1963, he was presented the prestigious Hall of Flame Award for his outstanding contributions to the natural gas industry.
 Zeigler served as chairman of the board of directors of the Southern Gas Association from 1981 to 1982. From 1983 to 1984, he served as chairman of Associated Gas Distributors and was a member of the organization's executive committee from 1983 to 1987. He is active in the Southeastern Gas Association, having served as its president in 1963, on its board of directors from 1958 to 1964, and on its advisory council from 1973 to the present time. He is a member of the board of directors of North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry and an honorary member of the North Carolina Industrial Development Council. For three terms, from 1969 to 1972, he chaired the Gastonia Industrial Diversification Commission.
 During the past year, Zeigler accepted the challenge of chairing the Enterprise 2000 Advisory Council, a special task force of Gaston County's Chamber of Commerce created to assist the Chamber in raising money to be used for funding new programs, increasing staff, and renovating the Chamber's building.
 Zeigler is a member of the Board of Visitors from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina and for the University of North Carolina -- Charlotte. He is member of the National Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, the Board of Advisors for the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina, the board of directors for the Community Foundation of Gaston County, and chairman of the Advisory Board of Duke University Eye Center. He is also known for his long-time commitment to other organizations such as the North Carolina University Foundation, the North Carolina Child Advocacy Institute, the United Way, Belmont Abbey College, Gaston College, and the Gaston County YMCA.
 Public Service Company, headquartered in Gastonia, North Carolina, distributes natural gas to over 240,000 customers and 87 cities, towns and communities in 26 counties throughout North Carolina.
