C. Lee Cox, Airtouch Vice Chairman, Elected to PG&E Board.


SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 1996--Pacific Gas and Electric Company today elected to its board of directors C. Lee Cox, vice chairman of AirTouch Communications.

Cox, 54, is also president and chief executive officer of AirTouch Cellular. AirTouch is a global wireless communications company that operates in 13 countries, providing cellular and paging services.

Before being named vice chairman in 1994, Cox had served as president and chief operating of AirTouch Communications. He also served as president and chief executive officer of PacTel Corporation before AirTouch Communications' spin-off from Pacific Telesis Group.

Cox is responsible for all domestic cellular, personal communications services See PCS.  (PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. He is also president of the Wireless Management Company, an AirTouch and US WEST joint venture established in 1995, and serves as chairman of the seven-member partnership committee that oversees the venture. In addition, Cox is a member of the management committee governing the partnership that brought together AirTouch and US WEST's cellular operations with those of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX NYNEX New York-New England & X for the Unknown (Telephone Company)

. He is also chairman of the management committee overseeing PCS PrimeCo, the PCS alliance formed by AirTouch, US WEST, NYNEX and Bell Atlantic.

Cox began his 32-year career in the Bell System as a manager with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in 1964. After several marketing and operations assignments, he became vice president of corporate communications for Pacific Bell in 1983. Cox was elected executive vice president of operations for Pacific Bell the following year, and was named executive vice president of marketing in 1986.

A native of San Jose, Cox is a 1963 graduate of San Jose State University.

Cox was elected to the PG&E board as three board members retired today: George A. Maneatis, past president of PG&E; Professor William F. Miller of Stanford University, and John B. M. Place, former chairman and chief executive officer of Crocker National Corporation and Crocker National Bank Crocker National Bank was a United States bank headquartered in San Francisco, California. It was acquired by and merged into Wells Fargo Bank in 1986. History
