"Bringing MPEG from the laboratory to the home has been a collective effort. It has taken this distinguished group as well as many others in the industry to place MPEG at the center of digital video applications worldwide."

Balkanski teamed up with Dr. Edmund Sun and Dr. Didier Le Gall, then the MPEG video committee chairman and now C-Cube's Chief Technology Officer, in 1988 to found C-Cube and begin building MPEG into the global standard it is today. Balkanski's naming to the list comes one year after C-Cube became the first silicon maker to ship one million DVD chips in a quarter. The milestone signaled the emergence of the DVD format as a worldwide success and established C-Cube as the DVD market leader.

Balkanski's recognition as one of the top 21 DVD executives isn't the first time his contribution to MPEG has been honored. In 1995, C-Cube became the first semiconductor company to receive the entertainment industry's highest honor -- the Emmy Award Emmy award
