), a global provider of broadband communications products, software systems, and services, today announced the introduction of GigE Max, a new optical transport module in the Company's CHP Max5000(TM) headend platform. The GigE Max provides features and performance optimized specifically for MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  transport between VOD (video-on-demand) servers and remotely located hubs. The GigE Max integrates Gigabit Ethernet grooming/aggregation, packet switching, and optical transport into a scalable, modular solution for VOD transport. Through this convergence, external grooming switches are eliminated, thereby avoiding stranding bandwidth and saving on capital expenses, complexity, floor space, and power consumption.

The GigE Max supports ring and star network topologies with drop, add, and pass functionality of MPEG streams for maximum flexibility, and is offered in both 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps versions. "Pay-as-you-grow" scaling is provisioned through 2.5Gbps plug-in modules, each supporting 613 streams, and from a variety of WAN (Wide Area Network) optics, including ITU (International Telecommunications Union See ITU.

(body, standard) International Telecommunications Union - (ITU) ITU-T, the telecommunication standardisation sector of ITU, is responsible for making technical recommendations about telephone and data (including fax) communications systems for PTTs and suppliers.
) CWDM (Course WDM) An optical transmission method that is used for shorter distances than dense WDM (DWDM). Also known as "wide WDM," CWDM transmits fewer channels and uses wider spacing between the channels for distances up to 60 km. Wider spacing up to 25 nm, compared to 1.  (Coarse Wave-Division Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

C-COR's GigE Max product portfolio offers operators the flexibility to combine a scalable "pay-as-you-grow" business model for today's VOD deployment needs with a "future-proof" infrastructure strategy going forward. Specifically, the 2.5Gbps GigE Max is suitable for operators following a "pay-as-you-grow" business model as it enables low cost VOD deployment with more than double the capacity of basic GigE solutions. It also affords long reach with less fiber network complexity than other high-bandwidth offerings, while being interoperable with SONET OC-48 links. The 10Gbps GigE Max, on the other hand, offers enormous bandwidth scalability for operators seeking the ultimate "future-proof" infrastructure.
