The GigE Max provides features and performance optimized specifically for MPEG transport between VOD (video-on-demand) servers and remotely located hubs. The GigE Max integrates Gigabit Ethernet grooming/aggregation, packet switching, and optical transport into a scalable, modular solution for VOD transport. Through this convergence, external grooming switches are eliminated, thereby avoiding stranding bandwidth and saving on capital expenses, complexity, floor space, and power consumption.

The GigE Max supports ring and star network topologies with drop, add, and pass functionality of MPEG streams for maximum flexibility, and is offered in both 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps versions. "Pay-as-you-grow" scaling is provisioned through 2.5Gbps plug-in modules, each supporting 613 streams, and from a variety of WAN (Wide Area Network) optics, including ITU (International Telecommunications Union) CWDM (Coarse Wave-Division Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) wavelength lasers with versions for short, intermediate, and long reach applications.
