C'MON AND TAKE A FREEMAN RIDE.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Compared to most teen-agers, Adam Freeman appears to have it all. He's the quarterback for undefeated Burroughs High of Burbank, and perhaps more important, he drives some really cool wheels: a bright red, fully restored '56 Chevy truck with a souped-up 357 engine.

``I like it. Every day people offer to buy it,'' Freeman said. ``It's clean and I think the best thing about the car is the front grill. It's really nice and shiny.''

The school had a car show a week ago and coach Keith Knoop said Freeman's truck was a highlight.

``I'd say he's got the nicest car on the team, no question about it,'' coach Keith Knoop said.

Freeman has no problem getting attention.

``Since the school color is red, too, everyone notices him when he drives that truck,'' said his father, Laban. ``Parents call me all the time, telling me they saw my son driving down the street.''

SPUTTER, SPUTTER

Talk about your bad starts. Grant fumbled the opening kickoff Friday against Cleveland of Reseda, and Jackson Love returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. Then Grant's Anthony Dickson returned the ensuing kickoff for a long touchdown, but the score was nullified nul·li·fy

``It wasn't a good start for them, but it was a good start for us,'' Cleveland coach Mike Costa said.

A BIG OBSTACLE

When 280-pound Saugus lineman Eli Munoz gets a full head of steam, watch out.

``I've seen him decleat a few guys, just knock them right off their feet,'' quarterback Chris Ahlheim said. ``He's just about our biggest lineman and when he gets a running start, he just destroys people.''

GIRL POWER

Leah Shelton, one of Valencia's top girls' soccer and softball players, is making an impact as a football kicker. She kicked a 18-yard field goal with six seconds left to beat high-powered Skyline of Oakland 17-14 on Friday. It was her first field-goal attempt of the season.

``I was very nervous,'' she said. ``The guys think I'm crazy "I'm Crazy" is a short story written by J. D. Salinger in 1945 for Collier's magazine. From all his short stories involving Holden Caulfield, this one is most similar to Catcher In The Rye, as it simply recounts well-known scenes with Mr.  for playing football, but the girls are glad. I just want everyone to know that I'm out here for my team, not for myself.''

Coach Brian Stiman had used Shelton for extra-point kicks only, and she has converted 11 of 13. He decided to put her in for the game-winning field goal because the ball was so close to the goal line that it was like a PAT.

``I'd have to say it was a pressure situation and Leah came through,'' Stiman said. ``It was definitely not as relaxing as an extra point. The atmosphere was much more nervous. But she put it through under those circumstances.''

A TEAM PLAYER

Keyes, who is also the starting strong safety, has no problem sharing carries.

``I don't mind switching off with Kevin because that just helps me rest up for defense,'' Keyes said.

Granada Hills surrendered a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the first play against visiting Gardena, but the Highlanders rebounded for a 54-6 victory to improve to 4-0.

Granada Hills allowed just two first downs and 66 total yards. Khalid Ali rushed for 128 yards and scored three touchdowns for Granada Hills, and Jeremy Leach was 10 of 12 for 124 yards and one touchdown.

Burbank lineman Shaun Tolnay will take an unofficial visit to the University of San Diego in two weeks and he said he's also hoping to visit Oregon State after the season.

BLUNTLY, STRONGER

San Fernando coach Sean Blunt weighed about 165 pounds when he played football for the Tigers in the 1980s. He's been lifting weights daily since and he's up to 235 pounds. In the weight room, he puts his 300-pound linemen to shame.

``I'm putting up about 375 pounds in the bench press these days,'' Blunt said. ``I can outlift all of them.''

Malibu marks the debut of its new field Saturday against L.A. Baptist of North Hills. The Sharks are 0-3, but coach Rich Lawson said the team has been hurt because many top athletes from the area have transferred to other schools. ``We've got just 21 kids and three seniors,'' he said. ``I don't have the luxury of recruiting and a lot of our players are at places like Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. The kids are learning they have to play through all kinds of adversity, but that's the way life is. You don't always get what you deserve.''

MISSION

Chaminade of West Hills (1-3) is having its problems, but Marcus Everett is developing into one of the region's most dangerous kick returners. His 83-yarder Friday against Burroughs was the sophomore's second long touchdown return of the season.

Camarillo TE Andrew Berkovich, who hasn't played because of a knee injury, is due back in a week or two.

The Engil

Once again, as our version of the All-Madden Team, we award ``Engils'' to deserving players each week because Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman is so hard-nosed. Keep reading, you'll get the idea.

FOUR ENGILS

Harry Welch, coach

Canyon

Welch had to overcome a lot to beat Highland of Palmdale 3-0 Friday, his first victory since coming out of a seven-year retirement. His Cowboys somehow prevailed even though they managed just 121 total yards, 5-of-26 passing and 120 penalty yards. Plus, Highland had first-and-goal at the 2-yard line in the last minute but couldn't score.

``There was some amazing calls and amazing things that happened,'' Welch said. ``I think the craziest call was a pass interference on a running play. A running play?''

THREE ENGILS

Jeremy Boyle, WR/DB

El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:
  • There is an El Camino Real in California; see: El Camino Real (California).

Boyle was hurting from a sore wrist but convinced coaches he could contribute against Van Nuys on Friday. He intercepted four passes to set a school record, adding four receptions and a 34.6-yard average on four punts as the Conquistadores won 41-0.

``My wrist is sore, but it's nothing,'' Boyle said.

TWO ENGILS

Luke Sniewski, QB

Granada Hills

Last season, Sniewski got in for one play, a handoff. This year, he's enjoyed three strong outings, including a 20-for-33, 233-yard, four-TD performance to beat Jefferson of L.A. 35-12 Friday.
