The Irishman, whose goalscoring exploits saw him grab the headlines during Hibs' Under-19s' League and Cup triumphs last season, is hopeful of making his full debut next season.

Hughes has set the club's youngsters a target of pushing the seasoned professionals for a place in the team and Byrne insists he is ready to step up to the plate.

He said:"Next season I will be working hard, there is no doubt about it. I am not there to make up the numbers. I will start fresh, play well and see what happens from there.

"If I get my chance in the pre-season I'm sure I will take it. I will work my socks off."

Meanwhile, Hibs commercial director Fife Hyland insists Hughes' appointment has sparked a surge in season ticket sales.

Hyland said: "There's been a real wave of enthusiasm since the manager was appointed and last weekend was our best of the year in terms of the number of season tickets and strips sold."
