Bynari Inc. Maker of Exchange Replacement Software Going Open Source.

Business Editors & High Tech Writers

Today, Bynari, Inc. announced that it has made its acclaimed Exchange replacement software open source. The Company has made its source code for InsightServer, InsightConnector and Bynari's LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory.  Client for Outlook available to resellers, manufacturers and customers for a fee. The software runs on IBM's S/390 through xSeries Intel platforms and all versions of Windows with Outlook.

"We've decided to let everyone with a need into the party," says Tom Adelstein, Bynari Inc.'s CTO (Chief Technical Officer) The executive responsible for the technical direction of an organization. Beside end-user demand, manufacturers of products which compete with Exchange have attempted to license our software. Now, they can have the source code as well as the product for a modest fee."

Under the terms of Bynari's new model, end users can purchase the entire suite of Bynari Inc. products with source code for a flat rate. The software agreement allows the end user to modify the software to meet their specific needs. If a purchaser chooses to redistribute the software, Bynari will retain a modest royalty.

Bynari Inc. also sees a need for localization Customizing software and documentation for a particular country. It includes the translation of menus and messages into the native spoken language as well as changes in the user interface to accommodate different alphabets and culture. "One of the most pressing requirements Bynari Inc. sees is the need to provide the product in numerous languages," says Adelstein. "This should allow companies to purchase the source code and localize lo·cal·ize

Bynari's value proposition involves what it sees as a large scale movement away from Microsoft(R) Exchange and into server consolidations. Bynari's products allows organizations to use Outlook with native functions while doing away with Exchange.

"In most respects," Adelstein says, "the user experience is transparent." Similar to other applications running on Linux, the Microsoft desktop users doesn't realize they are connector to a Linux server instead of NT or Windows 2000.
