Buy that car now! (The LABJ's L.A. Stories).


If you're in the market for a new or newer -- car, now is the time to buy. At least that's the opinion of a Republican strategist and, grudgingly, of a Democratic state law maker.

One of the panelists, Republican political strategist Arnold Steinberg, peppered Assembly woman Jackie Goldberg, D-Hollywood with questions about the budget, including this one:

"Let me ask you a practical question With the vehicle license fee going up and the sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  going up, when should the viewer out there buy that car? Within the month?"

After a bit of hemming and hawing speaking hesitantly and inarticulately, with numerous pauses and interjections.

, Goldberg responded: "The VLF (Very Low Frequency) See low radiation.  (vehicle license fee) will probably go up 60 to 90 days after it is passed in the Legislature."

Steinberg responded: "So there you have it. if you're going to go out and buy a car do it in the next 60 days. After that, it will cost you."
