Hundley left a lucrative sales career in the high-tech industry to start his butterfly farm isn't completely surprised, having delivered butterflies for a poignant memorial ceremony for the victims who perished on Alaska Airlines Flight 261 last year. A butterfly was released for each of the passengers who died, and though Hundley found it a beautiful and stirring event, he didn't see it affecting his business too much. At least until this year.

"We are seeing more and more purchases of butterflies for funerals and Memorials," said Hundley. "The beauty of a monarch butterfly being released into the air seems to carry a symbolism of life and spirit that people find soothing at funerals as much as they find it exciting at a wedding." The butterflies also bring some levity to what is clearly not a light situation for most people. "We heard from one client whose eight year old child, saddened at the loss of his Grandpa was given a butterfly to release and told that it would carry his Grandpa's spirit up to heaven," continued Hundley. "The child was able to find happiness and peace during that emotionally difficult time."

He added, "I couldn't have had that kind of affect on people's lives selling software."
