The first store, the VALU FOODS of BURLINGTON franchise is located in Burlington, Kan., a city of 2,735 the county seat of Coffey County, population 9,370.

The target of the VALU FOODS market test is the small rural community, far removed from any type of discount food outlet. A typical 1,000 square foot store, like the Burlington, Kan., prototype, is equipped to sell frozen center-of-the-plate items such as chicken, beef, fish, pasta While the only basic difference between these names is the shape of the pasta, each pasta is typically matched with a particular sauce based on cooking time, consistency, ability to hold sauce, ease of eating, etc. , vegetables and various frozen desserts.

The products are restaurant quality. They are offered every day to individuals at prices less than price clubs or discount food chains, and below normal supermarket prices. The model customer is the American family American Family is a photographic artwork exhibition by Renée Cox. See also

In addition to marketing directly to the public in small- to medium-sized cities in rural America, VALU FOODS plans to test the market for direct sales in the rural market areas to local restaurants, schools, hospitals and other institutions. The market plan outlines how these establishments can benefit from VALU FOODS' high-quality, low-cost product lines with local service.

The market test is planned to be expanded to a second store now under construction in Eastern Kansas. Several other locations are being considered to further test the distribution concept.

Assuming a successful completion of the market tests, the VALU FOODS concept should enhance the retail distribution capabilities of Butler's growing food distribution division, Redi Foods Inc.
