Buskers to Royal Opera House... Gig of the Week: Portico Quartet.

IN JUST a few years PORTICO QUARTET'S hypnotic music has taken them from busking This article is about a form of public entertainment. For an element in a corset, see Busk.

Busking is the practice of doing live performances in public places to entertain people, usually to solicit donations and tips.
 on London's South Bank to a Mercury Prize nomination to performing at the Royal Opera House.

Now as part of their long awaited UK tour they will be stopping off to perform at the Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt stage tonight.

Described as being like an "indie band that plays post-jazz", the Mercury award nominated Quartet (pictured right), play melodic, rhythmic music that mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass Philip Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a three-times Academy Award-nominated American composer. Their dance friendly brand of hook-laden, post-jazz was honed busking across Europe and playing in unusual spaces like churches, galleries, and chill-out zones and has earned them a cult following This article does not discuss cultist groups, personality cults, or "cult" in its original sense of "religious practice". On October 19 they released second album Isla on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records.

The album was recorded at Abbey Road with legendary producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radio Head, etc). Famed as a nurturer of young bands, Leckie has brought a powerful clarity to the band's music and Isla is a darker, more mature, expansive statement than their debut Knee Deep In The North Sea.

On Isla, Portico Quartet, have added loop pedals, real-time electronics and strings arranged by the band's bassist Milo Milo, athlete of ancient Greece

However, the majority of the album was recorded live at Abbey Road (with one piece recorded in their shed) and each of the nine tracks has a distinct mood and atmosphere, while remaining firmly within their unique soundworld.

From the churning maelstrom Maelstrom, whirlpool, Norway: see Moskenstraumen.  of Clipper to the pounding pedal points of Dawn Patrol, from the fragility of Line to the anthemic ensemble of the title track, Isla is an album whose contents reveal fresh nuances and facets on each listen.

The double bill this evening also features 2009 Mercury Music Prize nominees SWEET BILLY PILGRIM with their atmospheric art-pop.

Their album Twice Born Men on David Sylvian's Samadhisound label was described as "the best album of its kind since Elbow''s all conquering The Seldom Seen Kid in Uncut magazine.
