Businessman Swaggart rises to reinvention challenge.

Byline: RETAIL NOTEBOOK By Joe Mosley The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - Les Swaggart is making the best of having an 800-pound gorilla gorilla, an ape, Gorilla gorilla, native to the lowland and mountain forests of western and central equatorial Africa. It is the largest of the apes, the males reaching a height of 5 to 6 ft (150–190 cm) with a 9-ft (144–cm) arm spread.  as a neighbor.

Swaggart was compensated, but his holdings were fragmented.

He had sold his primary business, Les' Service and Canopy Sales, in 1996. But new owner Richard Roser - who bought the business and not the property - moved the operation out of the way of the LTD project last year, settling on Franklin Boulevard in Glenwood.

Roser took with him the $4,600 in monthly rent he had been paying for the South A Street property and buildings, and Swaggart was left with one acre of land and a former trailer hitch shop next-door to the bus station.

"I was retired for six years there," says Swaggart, who owns the property with his wife, Desta. "It's kind of a shock to have to go back to work at age 70.

"It's been a pretty traumatic situation for us, but I think with a little effort we'll get everything back on track."

And Swaggart began foundation work this month for a 5,000-square-foot building that he hopes to lease to a soup-and-deli-type restaurant and another retail tenant or two.

In all, he expects to spend close to $800,000 in upgrading his remaining property.

"I won't have any money in the bank after that," Swaggart says. "But I think it will be a wonderful location, once we have it all done."

New coffee outlet goes organic

And there's another new coffee outlet in the works for both Springfield and Eugene.
