Jonathan Kane, 32, has just four weeks until he sets off on the Des Sables multi marathon across Morocco. The race has a fearsome fear·some

 reputation and each competitor knows their life is on the line if something goes wrong.

But Mr Kane, Liverpool's head of international development, has few fears.

He said: "It's an opportunity to raise money for charity, it's a way of getting to a high level of fitness and it's a real adventure."

The adventure includes sand storms, possible heat exhaustion heat exhaustion, condition caused by overexposure to sunlight or another heat source and resulting in dehydration and salt depletion, also known as heat prostration. The symptoms are severe headaches, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, and sometimes unconsciousness. , and even the chance of getting lost.

Mr Kane said: "They've only lost one person for more than 24 hours in the years the competition has been going. He survived by eating dead bats.

"Heat exhaustion is a real problem."
