 - an official "champion" of Wales - is to meet people from two north east Wales-based financial services companies to discuss future investment opportunities.

Mr Lewis is making a two-day visit to Wales this week to meet key figures and businesses in the fast growing financial services industry.

The grandson of a Welsh sheep farmer, he was officially appointed by the First Minister Rhodri Morgan as one of a number of high profile ambassadors for Wales and has responsibility for promoting and developing the UK's financial services sector.

During the Welsh Assembly Government-organised visit on Thursday and Friday he will meet Mr Morgan, Deputy First Minister IeuanWyn Jones and Mike Hnyda, a director of the Welsh Assembly Government's International Business Wales division, as well as representatives from firms including moneysupermarket.com and Wrexham-based Avox.

Flintshire-based money supermarket.com floated on the stock market last year and is the UK's leading price comparison website business. It employs more than 600 people at its headquarters on St David's Business Park, Ewloe.

Mr Morgan said: "The visit provides us with a platform to promote the sector in Wales while giving industry representatives an opportunity to meet David Lewis who is a superb ambassador for Wales.

"International Business Wales - our overseas trade and investment division - has linked into a number of events organised by the Lord Mayor's office in the UK and key overseas markets which have enabled them to meet and network with key companies and promote Wales.

"London is the leading global financial centre but we are securing investment in Wales through second wave developments from companies and expansion projects."

Wales is now home to more than 1,800 financial services companies employing in excess of 32,000 people.

He added: "Wales continues to develop and grow as a financial service centre and we have one of the most competitive cost bases in the UK and also benefit from the availability of a skilled and motivated workforce.

"Wales has had a number of great success stories in the financial services sector including Admiral Insurance which started with 50 people and now employs 2,500 people."
