Business intelligence.

Tableau Software, a developer of visual analysis and reporting systems for business intelligence, has brought out its first products, which the Seattle-based company says enable people of any technical ability to see and understand the information in databases by using a unique drag-and-drop interface. Tableau promotes what it terms "visual thinking" by producing interactive pictures of data rather than static rows and columns.

Tableau Software is the culmination of five years of research and development that originated in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president. . The project was initiated through a grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. The Tableau development team has produced what it calls "a fundamentally new way of interacting with the desktop files, relational databases and OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  [online application processing] servers" that are the backbone of the $20 billion database and business intelligence industries.

At the heart of Tableau's software is a new proprietary query language A generalized language that allows a user to select records from a database. It uses a command language, menu-driven method or a query by example (QBE) format for expressing the matching condition.  called VizQLTM. This new language marries a query to a visual response. By analyzing data visually, users can spot trends, outliers and relationships more quickly, leading to better insights. And because the software connects directly to data sources, Tableau says, users don't have to stop with one query: They can continue to explore their data, in effect conducting "visual Q & A" sessions to get the answers they need.

Tableau software is available as Tableau Standard Edition and Tableau Professional Edition. While both versions have the same feature set, the Standard Edition is compatible with data in Excel, Access and text files. The Professional Edition supports these data sources as well as Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System. , Microsoft SQL SQL
