The contracts will cover work on technologies to rapidly produce drugs and vaccines, Xcellerex said in a news release. The "accelerated manufacture of pharmaceuticals" program is a three-phase military program aimed at producing emergency treatments or vaccines for biological threats, Xcellerex said.

On the first contract, Xcellerex will collaborate with Dowpharma, a unit of Dow Chemical Co. of Midland, Mich., BioPharm Services, which has operations in Marlboro, and deltaDot Ltd. of London.

Xcellerex will collaborate with Neugenesis Corp. of Burlingame, Calif., on the second contract.

Grants awarded

BOSTON - State officials yesterday announced more than $400,000 in grants from the Workforce Training Fund to 11 companies across Central Massachusetts. The latest round of grants will help train 538 employees and are part of $1.7 million awarded to Massachusetts companies. Those receiving funds and the amounts are: A&J Industries of Uxbridge, $48,000; Curtis Industries of Worcester, $49,000; Essential Healthcare Ayer Inc. of Ayer, $46,300; Hybricon Corp. of Ayer, $43,300; Injectronics Corp. of Clinton, $44,686; New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Cartilage treatment

CAMBRIDGE - Biotechnology company Genzyme Corp. said Monday that patients who had poor results from cartilage repair procedures showed sustained improvement with Carticel, a cartilage replacement surgically implanted in the knees. Development funds

BOSTON - The state's new budget for the 2008 fiscal year includes $250,000 for the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp.

The nonprofit group reported this week in a news release that the money will go to economic development efforts. The group used funding from last year's state budget to team up with Fitchburg State College and Mount Wachusett Community College Mount Wachusett Community College is a two-year community college in Gardner, Massachusetts. It offers associate degrees as well as a transfer program for students to earn credits for transfer to other colleges.  to create the North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council, which creates programs to boost jobs and development in 26 communities from Ayer to Orange.
