Prof. gets grant

WORCESTER - Anthony Carruthers of Sutton, professor of biochemistry and molecular pharmacology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School UMMS is ranked fourth in primary care education among the nation’s 125 medical schools in the 2006 U.S.News & World Report annual guide, “America’s Best Graduate Schools”. UMMS is also a major center for research. , has been given a Gail Patrick Innovation Award for $100,000 from the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of  Research Foundation, UMass reported.

The grant is named in memory of the late Gail Patrick, a movie actress and producer and the first national chairman of the ADA's board of directors.

Insurer renamed

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - UnumProvident Corp., the nation's largest disability insurer, has changed its name to Unum Group to distance itself from a regulatory probe and related restructuring moves. Unum reorganized its claims handling process and divested less profitable businesses outside the United States and the United Kingdom after settling allegations in November 2004 that it improperly denied benefits to customers.

"For the most part, that phase of the company is now behind us," Jim Sabourin, a spokesman for Unum said in an interview this week. The name change "recognizes that today we're a different company."
