Business Week: BellSouth Getting Ready to Make a Run at Sprint?NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1999-- Business Week has learned from sources with knowledge of the situation that BellSouth Corp. (BLS See Bureau of Labor Statistics. ). is preparing a bid of its own for Sprint (FON), which has been in active negotiations for more than a week with MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device. (2) (Microwave Communications Inc. WorldCom (WCOM WCOM MCI/Worldcom (stock symbol) WCOM Windows Component Object Model WCOM Wireless Communication ). As of Oct. 1, BW reports, BellSouth executives were leaning toward making a full bid for all of Sprint. BellSouth, however, is unlikely to have its counteroffer In contract law, a proposal made in response to an original offer modifying its terms, but which has the legal effect of rejecting it. A counteroffer normally terminates the original offer, but the original offer remains open for acceptance if the counteroffer expressly ready before the Sprint board meets on Oct. 3. Any bid for Sprint likely wouldn't come until the following week, sources say. All three companies declined to comment on the situation. |
