Judging for the competition was done by David Kinney, Business North Carolina's editor-in-chief; Jim Nichols, until recently the North Carolina Department of Commerce's manager of electronics and information-technology development; Jeff Reid, executive director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology Venturing at UNC (Universal Naming Convention) A standard for identifying servers, printers and other resources in a network, which originated in the Unix community. A UNC path uses double slashes or backslashes to precede the name of the computer.  Chapel-Hill, and Jim Davis. The criteria for judging the award included a broad range of quantitative measures, including revenue growth, employment growth and capital raised over a three-year period. Cree Inc. won the 2003 competition. Ultimus, Lending Tree and Red Hat were runners up. SAS Institute was the winner of last year's competition.
