The survey findings were presented by Toni Lucia, Managing Director of Right's Organizational Consulting practice, during a session today at the World Business Forum in Radio City Music Hall Radio City Music Hall

. Eighty-six percent of respondents were senior executives whose job titles ranged from Director to CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. .

"Business leaders are clearly feeling encouraged about the economy and the stock market," Lucia observed. "While widespread hiring is still not the norm, we are beginning to see signs that the job market could be strengthening, with more than a third of executives reporting their organization has significant plans to hire before the end of the year.

"However, a majority of executives report that their organization does not plan any significant hiring this year, despite the fact that they are predicting double-digit growth. Many companies will be trying to do more with the same resources, which means the stakes for selecting, developing and retaining talent remain high."

Despite all the uproar over outsourcing, 75 percent of those surveyed said globalization globalization

The number one business challenge confronting leaders is generating profitable growth for their companies. Twenty-one percent of respondents selected it as the most pressing challenge from a list of ten. The leaders noted several other business challenges they face, including helping their organization become a thought leader and innovator in their industry and hiring and retaining the right people.

From a personal leadership standpoint, 22 percent of respondents said the top leadership challenge they faced was balancing the conflicting needs of multiple stakeholders.

"This creates a complex challenge for leaders," observed Lucia. "Today's leader must be responsive, flexible, and understanding of the needs of customers, shareholders, and employees who often have competing demands."

Also identified as significant personal leadership challenges were: mentoring and developing a strong leadership talent pipeline (named by 17 percent) and balancing work and personal life (15.4 percent).

When asked what top three leadership capabilities will be more in demand in three years than they are today, respondents named:

-- Providing strategic direction and vision

-- Inventing new offerings and / or reinventing existing

offerings to meet a new marketplace need

-- Developing organizational talent
