When contending with circulation woes and the negative affects of Do Not Call Lists to its telemarketing telemarketing, the practice of selling goods or services to customers by means of the telephone or of surveying consumer preferences in telephone conversations.  efforts, the Erie (PA) Times-News chose to improve its operational efficiency and seek out hidden revenue streams with assistance from business intelligence (BI) software.  based in Bethesda, MD, Panorama Software's NovaView(TM) solution was integrated with E.J. Barry's IntelliQube data warehouse, to leverage the power of Microsoft's SQL Server An earlier relational DBMS from Sybase and from Microsoft. Sybase introduced SQL Server in 1988 for various Unix versions. In that same year, with help from IBM, Sybase created an OS/2 version that Microsoft licensed and branded as Microsoft SQL Server.  2000(R), Analysis Services(R) and Reporting Services(R) and uncover critical information about the newspaper's circulation.

'Do Not Call List' Negatively Impacts Paper's Circulation

An award-winning family-owned newspaper with a circulation of 60,000 daily and 88,000 Sunday, management at the Erie Times-News The Erie Times-News is a daily morning newspaper in Erie, Pennsylvania. It has a daily circulation of about 61,000[1] and a Sunday circulation of about 88,000[1].  was unable to properly analyze data regarding daily single copy sales, subscription 'no pays,' information relating to relating to relate prepconcernant

sell-outs and returns, nor could they build reports so that managers and sales staff could respond to ever-changing conditions within the business. The paper also faced challenges caused by new telemarketing restrictions recognized as "Do Not Call Lists." The Erie Times-News needed tighter control of the newspapers' daily business activity to assist in the development of a new go-to-market strategy, which included a focus on a broader geographic readership and improved retention of both new and existing customers.

E.J. Barry recognized that Panorama's solution would deliver in depth analysis of circulation, readership and retention through a highly graphical interface See GUI. , complete with easy-to-generate reports of key performance indictors (KPIs). With business intelligence in place, the Erie Times-News has realized tangible results in just a few short months. Non-pay subscriptions have declined nearly 15 percent, single-copy sales are up and the newspaper is on track to achieve its sales goals for the year.

"While we've only just scratched the surface of our newly integrated business intelligence solution, we are able to use it every day to do near real-time analysis to track retention rates and single copy sales, and identify repeat non-pay customers for subscription campaigns," said Glenn Caruso, Erie Times-News circulation director. "Our circulation, sales and marketing teams all use the system to monitor daily performance and pull the analysis needed to support the creation of highly targeted and effective direct marketing campaigns."

The highly integrated data management system, which resides on a server at the newspaper's offices, uses Microsoft's SQL Server 2000, Analysis Services and Reporting Services. E.J. Barry then combined the strengths of its IntelliQube data warehouse solution with Panorama NovaView, which extends Microsoft's SQL Server and Analysis and Reporting Services, and allows desktop and Web access to the data housed in Intellicube. NovaView includes valuable features such a "bubble-up" exception reporting, which warns of an underlying problem even when a user is analyzing a broader view of data. For example, NovaView can identify a poorly performing delivery route affecting the sales numbers of an entire district. NovaView also enables users to display sales results and identify growth opportunities via a highly visual mapping system. This has enabled the Erie Times-News to physically map the areas where subscriber no-pays exist and where single copy subscriptions are regularly sold out or returned. All Erie Times-News users can easily complete "self-serve" reporting and analysis functions, eliminating additional IT man hours previously needed to complete the reporting process.

The implementation of Panorama's NovaView and IntelliQube has resulted in the Erie Times-News' ability to:

- Forecast the number of upcoming new subscribers against the number of subscriptions that will end

- Quickly identify gaps between beginning and ending subscriptions with enough time to take action and meet circulation goals

- Use mapping tools to graphically display where both problems and opportunities lay

- Direct retention campaigns to customers whose subscriptions are about to expire

- Target potential customers who are most likely to subscribe

- Review real-time data Real-time data denotes information that is delivered immediately after collection. There is no delay in the timeliness of the information provided.

on all levels as information is updated daily

- Accurately forecast single-copy sales to cut down costly returns or increase goals where there are consistent sell-outs

- Use sophisticated analysis to compare year-to-date and year-over-year results

"By combining the strengths of NovaView and IntelliQube through Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System. , the Erie Times-News has been able to uncover in minutes what used to take upwards of a month," said Larry Sackett, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "In our opinion Panorama's NovaView is the best OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  tool as it exposes the full functionality of Analysis Services. After working with a variety of OLAP tools, we've concluded that NovaView is our preferred solution."
