Business Intelligence Solutions Working with a Consultant.

What exactly is "business intelligence?" After every sector of the economy tumbled in late 2007 and early 2008, the term sounded almost like an oxymoron. But all kidding aside, "business intelligence," or "BI," refers to the technologies, applications, and skills used to help a company or corporation acquire a better understanding of its commercial context. In plain English, business intelligence aims to support better business decision-making.

Finding an expert to help you with your business intelligence (BI) solutions is instrumental in the success of your company's objectives. You should look for a company consultant that has a good track record of highly successful business intelligence projects and someone that has worked with a wide variety of technologies and industries. Additionally a consultant who is "technology agnostic," having expertise with a wide variety of technologies and tools will ensure that they can help guide your project through all phases of the development life cycle.

Common functionality of business intelligence applications includes reporting, online analytical processing (OLAP), analytics, dashboards, scorecards, data mining, corporate performance management, and predictive analysis.

The implementation of business intelligence solutions requires a skill set that takes into account the needs and intended benefits of a well executed BI solution. Identifying the scope of work to address pain points and priorities is instrumental. Determining the data required early and assessing the data that is available makes for a smooth approach at solving business intelligence issues. If the business or enterprise does not have a data warehouse for example, a good business intelligence consultant can design and develop one, including data marts if necessary.

Making recommendations based on available resources, and taking into account the deficiencies are the best ways to determine the proper course of action. This identifies where and what are the best methods for obtaining the desired goal. Sufficient data sources are determined and corrections are suggested in the presentation of the optimal plan to move forward on.

Once these initial stages have been defined, then it is easier to get direction to the best solution for your particular needs. Integration can begin and the formulation of the previously identified reporting tools can be created to insure success.

Proper prediction, performance management, dashboards and data mining to name a few, are the fruits of the process that an experienced consultant will help you achieve. Without the direction of someone that has knowledge of the leading BI tools, a well informed decision becomes difficult.

The best consultants work closely with all parties of interest to develop the final reports, train the rest of your staff, and assign security levels according to customer requirements.
