is to guide rehabilitation professionals and entrepreneurs along a structured path toward developing or expanding a private practice enterprise. The book fulfills its purpose well. The 7 chapters cover the major steps to establishing a health care practice by using a practical, "how-to" format. It begins with personal assessment, then proceeds with business structures and plans, marketing plans, operational issues, financial management, and implementation, and it concludes with evaluation and refinement of the business. The book is an effective short course in developing a business plan for a new health care enterprise.

The authors provide adequate coverage of most topics. Each chapter consists of brief chapter objectives, followed by basic information in paragraph and outline form. Practical exercises and checklists are featured in each chapter to help the reader to master the material and develop the business plan. At the conclusion of each chapter is a "Tips and Tools" section that provides practical resources to assist the reader. References, suggested readings, and related resources are included in each chapter.

In addition, the authors provide multiple resources in the appendix, including a template for a business plan, sample financial management and marketing materials, checklists for policies and procedures Policies and Procedures are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfill the policies. They are often initiated because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental  manuals, facility planning ideas, equipment lists, informed consent template, incident reporting form, documentation, and productivity self-assessments. A Web site for updated materials is available at: http://www. slackbooks.com/businessfundamentals.

Coverage of theoretical management background is limited, which is appropriate to the practical approach pursued by the authors. The weakest content component is human resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees.  management, which is limited to checklists for hiring, maintaining appropriate files, wages and benefits, and orientation. Supervisory concepts, such as motivation, leadership, conflict management, and diversity, are notably absent.

The strengths of the workbook are in the initial chapter, which provides in-depth self-analysis tools for practitioners to assess their personal characteristics because they have an impact on the development of a private practice. The step-by-step approach to developing core documents, as well as the book's extensive use of checklists for planning, adds value to this offering.

This book is not intended for use as a textbook in a professional (entry-level) education program. It is better suited for professionals who have basic clinical and supervisory experience, and who may be interested in developing entrepreneurial projects and private practices. It provides practical, thoughtful guidelines guidelines,
