Through an "En Espanol" link on Business Filings' homepage, Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs can now access content to learn about the incorporation process and options available to them. According to the Minorities in Business, 2001 report from the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, the number of Hispanic-owned businesses grew 30 percent from 1992 to 1997 (the year of the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau) versus a growth rate of only seven percent for all U.S. businesses for the same time-period.

There were over one million Hispanic-owned businesses in 1997, the most of any minority group. With Hispanics continuing today to represent the largest growth in population of any minority group, it is reasonable to assume the number of Hispanic-owned businesses continues to grow.

The SBA's report also states that over 85% of Hispanic-owned businesses in 1997 operated as sole proprietorships. In a sole proprietorship, the owner's personal assets are considered legally the same as the business assets and can be used to satisfy business debts. Incorporating a business or forming an LLC helps to protect the owner's personal assets. Incorporation also provides certain tax advantages and can establish credibility for a new business.
