Longman retired in the mid 1980s, after several stints in advertising and marketing. He returned to book writing, and was not quite finished a manuscript on remarkable old people when he succumbed to lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell.  in 1989 at age 75.
