Bike maker earns export award

Eugene-based Burley Design Burley Design Coorperative is a cooperative company based in Eugene, Oregon, United States that produces a variety of outdoor family products. Burley is known for their bicycles, recumbent bicycles, and child and cargo trailers.  Cooperative has been named Oregon Exporter of the Year by a group of state agencies and business associations.

The award, part of the Governor's International Business Achievement Awards, recognizes an Oregon exporter that shows innovation in product development and in opening new markets.

 makes bicycle trailers A bicycle trailer is a motorless wheeled frame with a hitch system designed for transporting cargo by bicycle. A bicycle trailer expands the cargo-carrying capacity of a bicycle greatly, allowing point-to-point transport of objects up to 4 cubic yards (3 cubic meters) in volume and , tandem and recumbent bicycles and other bike products. The company, a cooperative, was founded in 1978 with four members and now has 85 member employees.

Burley recently has increased its international marketing by developing foreign-language Web sites and ad campaigns.

The awards event took place Wednesday at the Valley River Inn in Eugene.

Award sponsors include the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon Economic & Community Development Department, and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Other award recipients were: Loose Ends, Salem, Oregon Salem (IPA: [ˈseɪ ləm̩]) is the capital of the U.S. state of Oregon, and the county seat of Marion County. The district of West Salem lies in Polk County.  Global Trader of the Year; Northwest Container Services, Portland, Oregon International Service Award; Clarity Visual Systems, Portland, and Merchants Exchange of Portland, tied for Outstanding Achievement in International Business; Daily Shipping News, Camas, Wash., Special Recognition.
