Roughly 41 workers who lost their jobs at logging equipment maker Ross Corp. last May when production at the Eugene factory was moved to Canada have been ruled eligible for additional benefits under a North American Free Trade Agreement North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), accord establishing a free-trade zone in North America; it was signed in 1992 by Canada, Mexico, and the United States and took effect on Jan. 1, 1994.  program.

Ross Corp.'s parent company, Key Equity Capital, also owns Madill Corp. of Canada, another maker of logging equipment. When Key Equity shut the west Eugene plant, it transferred the plant's production to a Madill factory in Nanaimo, B.C.

Pape Group buys John Deere outlets

The Pape Group Inc. of Eugene has completed the acquisition of two John Deere construction and forestry equipment dealerships in Oregon and Washington, making it the holder of the largest such dealership in the Northwest.

Pape, which owns heavy equipment and aircraft-related firms, bought the assets of Portland-based Hessel Tractor & Equipment Co. and Tacoma-based Smith Tractor & Equipment Co.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal also included the purchase of Smith's Bobcat bobcat: see lynx.

 Northwest outlets, which are being merged with Pape's Bobcat West dealers.

The 11 Hessel and Smith outlets have been named Pape Machinery. The acquisition of Hessel and Smith led to the elimination of about five jobs, said Tim Clevenger, Pape's director of corporate development. Pape Machinery will have 253 employees.
