PORTLAND - Saying it was helped by strong business and two acquisitions, Umpqua Holdings Corp. on Tuesday reported an 83 percent jump in third-quarter profits.

The Portland-based parent firm of Umpqua Bank said it earned $6 million, or 30 cents a share, in the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared to $3.3 million, or 17 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.

Financial results for Umpqua Holdings, which plans to acquire Centennial Bancorp on Nov. 15, were boosted by last year's acquisitions of Independent Financial Network of Coos Bay Coos Bay (ks), city (1990 pop. 15,076), Coos co., SW Oreg., a port of entry on Coos Bay; founded 1854 as Marshfield, inc. 1874, renamed 1944.  and Albany-based Linn-Benton Bank.

Umpqua's total assets grew 22 percent, to $1.59 billion.
