Business Digest.Byline: The Register-Guard CITY/REGION Tax program trains volunteer counselors For number crunchers who aren't sated by preparing their own tax returns, now is the time to sign up for tax counselor training. The AARP Tax-Aide program offers a five-day tax preparation course beginning Jan. 3, 2003, at the Campbell Senior Center in Eugene for those with no experience preparing taxes for others. An additional week of training will also be offered in January for all volunteer counselors. Those who pass a test will be assigned to one of 14 sites in Eugene, Springfield, Cottage Grove, Veneta and Junction City. Volunteer counselors must work at a tax site one day a week from Feb. 1 to April 15. Other volunteers, including those with computer and clerical skills, are needed. Training for these volunteers is in February. Plus, the program needs laptop computers to run tax programs. Tax-Aide is a federally registered nonprofit organization, and donations are tax deductible. For additional information, call Bob Bottge, 687-1777. - From Register-Guard and news service reports |
