Bush no Nixon.

I must take exception to the Comment ("Bush's Bitter Deal") in the March issue of The Progressive. You describe Bush as "perhaps the most dangerous [President] in the history of the republic, with the exception of Richard Nixon." While I hold no particular brief for the late Richard Nixon, he was nowhere near as dangerous as the current President. Richard Nixon was not a nice man. He was, on the whole, unprincipled, but he was a pragmatist. He was able to achieve rapprochement with China. He pushed for funding for Vietnam veterans This article is about the French band. On the other hand, Bush is a nice man. He is a man of principle, to the point of dogmatism dog·ma·tism

I agree that George Bush is "perhaps the most dangerous [President] in the history of the republic." However, I disagree with Verb 1. disagree with - not be very easily digestible; "Spicy food disagrees with some people"
hurt - give trouble or pain to; "This exercise will hurt your back"
the last part, "with the exception of Richard Nixon." Despite his shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw.

Shortcomings may also be:
  • Shortcomings (SATC episode), an episode of the television series Sex and the City
, Nixon never dreamed of the excesses being perpetrated by Bush.

One must look beyond the President to the Presidency. Nixon was in office in the pre-Reagan era. At that time the Republican Party consisted of two factions: the Taft conservatives and the Rockefeller moderates. There was also a Democratic Party reasonably worthy of the name, as well as a liberal Supreme Court. In short, there were considerable checks and balances.

The election of Ronald Reagan changed all that. The ultra-conservatives gained control and have steadily increased their power ever since. It is this political climate that makes George Bush so dangerous to the country and the world.

The article "Bush's Bitter Deal" was right on! Thank you for your attention on the Social Security issue. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
