Bush in his September 12th speech at the United Nations. Rejoining UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was proposed by the Clinton State Department in 1993. But President Clinton did not have the political capital to pull it off. Thus it was left to a "conservative" Republican to do the job. President Reagan dropped U.S. membership in the organization in 1984 following considerable public outcry over a long string of UNESCO abuses. Especially outrageous was the proposed New World Information Order, under which UNESCO would license all journalists, broadcasters, and media personnel. UNESCO was a fount of subversion and controversy from its founding in 1946, coming under fire regularly for promoting world government and Marxism.
