Bush, GOP unveil $100 million school voucher scheme.


The White House and its allies in Congress are pushing a multi-million-dollar national voucher plan that would subsidize religious and other private schools.

In mid July, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced support of a $100 million voucher scheme that would pay for tuition and private school tutoring for about 28,000 students, The New York New York, state, United States

At a press briefing flanked by Republican Senate and House lawmakers, Spellings said the voucher plan would help poor students "trapped" in public schools deemed to be poorly performing.

Spellings said that if public schools could not show progress under the controversial No Child Left Behind law, students must be given other options, reported The Washington Post.

The Bush administration event came just four days after the U.S. Department of Education released a report saying public schools do as well or better than private schools in educating children from similar backgrounds.

The voucher bill is sponsored in Congress by Sen. Lamar Alexander Andrew Lamar Alexander (born July 3, 1940) is the senior United States Senator from Tennessee and a member of the Republican Party. He was previously the 45th Governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1987, U.S. Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993 under President George H.W.  (R-Tenn.), Sen. John Ensign John Eric Ensign (born 25 March 1958) is the junior United States Senator from Nevada, serving since January 2001. He is a member of the Republican Party, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.  (R-Nev.) and Reps. Howard McKeon Howard Philip "Buck" McKeon (born September 9 1938), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing the 25th District of California.  (R-Calif.) and Sam Johnson
