Bus-Tech Joins the NetApp(R) Partner Program; Offers Enterprise Customers a Simple, Compliant, Secure and Fast Nearline Mainframe Virtual Tape Solution.

BURLINGTON, Mass. -- Bus-Tech, Inc., a market leader in mainframe tape-on-disk controllers and data center connectivity products, today announced its Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS) tape controller is qualified with NetApp NearStore(R) and FAS (or Fabric-Attached storage) systems, and Decru DataFort(TM) encryption The reversible transformation of data from the original (the plaintext) to a difficult-to-interpret format (the ciphertext) as a mechanism for protecting its confidentiality, integrity and sometimes its authenticity. Encryption uses an encryption algorithm and one or more encryption keys.  appliances. With this announcement, Bus-Tech, NetApp, and Decru, a NetApp company, are providing customers that are considering mainframe tape replacement a solution with qualified interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other. , greater reliability, and enhanced "military-grade" security.

Additionally, Bus-Tech also announced membership in the NetApp Partner Program. As a member of the NetApp Partner Program, Bus-Tech will provide a complete mainframe tape-on-disk solution for standard tape operations through collaboration with NetApp and Decru. Additionally, as a member of the program, Bus-Tech is providing WORM (or write once, read many) virtual tape capability by supporting NetApp SnapLock(R), helping customers to meet the stringent storage requirements of SEC Rule 17a-4. The solution is also qualified with the Decru DataFort storage security appliance Security appliances protect computer networks from unwanted data traffic, intruders, email spam, enforce policies, and may also be used to create and manage VPNs. There are a number of types of security appliances.  and NetApp SnapMirror(R) data replication In database management, the ability to keep distributed databases synchronized by routinely copying the entire database or subsets of the database to other servers in the network.

, providing a highly secure solution for data replication and disaster recovery.

"We look forward to working with NetApp to offer customers new releases of our MAS product that will firmly position Bus-Tech as a comprehensive enterprise storage solution," said Al Brandt, vice president of Operations for Bus-Tech, Inc. "The MAS solution is well positioned in the mainframe storage market, and we are thrilled thrill

to be a part of the NetApp Partner Program to continue providing solutions for forward-thinking mainframe installations."

The MAS is a tape-on-disk controller that attaches directly to the mainframe FICON (FIber CONnector) An IBM mainframe channel introduced with its G5 servers in 1998. Based on the Fibre Channel standard, it boosts the transfer rate of ESCON's half-duplex 17MB/sec to a full-duplex 100MB/sec.  or ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas.  input/output channels and uses standard Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  IP or Fibre Channel to attach to NetApp storage systems. To the mainframe, the MAS emulates up to two-hundred fifty-six 3480/3490 tape drives, allowing mainframe-based applications to transparently store data on NearStore storage systems by writing files to an emulated tape device. Through the joint solution customers will receive the benefits of the MAS with NearStore, specifically fast data retrieval, cost competitive disk economics, large capacity in a small footprint, and industry leading options for data replication. DataFort appliances can be deployed transparently to provide wire-speed AES-256 encryption for data before it is written to disk or transferred to tape.

"We welcome Bus-Tech to the NetApp Partner Program," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Partners at Network Appliance (1) A specialized device for use on a network. For example, Web servers, cache servers and file servers can be implemented as general-purpose computers with the appropriate software or as network appliances, which are computers dedicated to a single function and cannot do anything . "The performance, scalability and security of the combined solution will greatly reduce the backup window and accelerate the average time to restore data in a typical mainframe environment. These customers are also protecting themselves--and their customers--by reducing the risk of unauthorized data access with Decru's industry-leading encryption and security platform."
