Burson-Marsteller Acquires Its Korean Joint Venture Partner, Merit Communications.


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1999--

Burson-Marsteller Burson-Marsteller is one of the largest public relations agencies in the world. It is unit of Young & Rubicam, which is owned by WPP Group PLC.[1] It was formed by Harold Burson and Bill Marsteler in 1954.  today announced that it has completed the acquisition of its Korean joint-venture partner, Merit Communications, Korea's largest public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  firm. Merit, which was founded in 1989 by Britons Bill Rylance and Bryan Matthews, both of whom previously worked for B-M, will now operate under the name Merit/Burson-Marsteller. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Burson-Marsteller has held a 25% stake in Merit since 1996.

In addition to the company's work for multinationals doing business in Korea, Merit has worked on major Korean government projects including media relations consulting and the global PR program for Korea's successful bid to host the 2002 World Cup. Last year, Burson-Marsteller and Merit worked with Korea's Ministry of Finance & Economy on a program to highlight the country's commitment to economic reform. Mr. Matthews will remain Representative Director of Merit/Burson-Marsteller.
