Burroughs Wellcome Fund Awards $25,000 Grant to DonorsChoose North Carolina; Amazon.com Award Winner Will Use Funds to Support Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in North Carolina Schools.


DURHAM, N.C. -- DonorsChoose.org, announced today that it has received a $25,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The money will be used to fund teacher submitted proposals focused on mathematics, science and technology. Priority will be given to projects that support hands-on, inquiry-based learning Inquiry based learning describes a range of philosophical, curricular and pedagogical approaches to teaching. Its core premises include the requirement that learning should be based around student questions. , submitted from Title 1 schools.

The BWF science education program targets student science enrichment, public policy and research, and capacity and partnership building. The grant to DonorChoose will improve teachers' abilities to offer science and mathematics programs in the classroom.

Since its inception in North Carolina, DonorsChoose North Carolina has raised more than $ $610,393 to fund 1,751 projects. These funds have come from donors in 46 states and have helped 52,176 North Carolina students. Most of these students come from schools with a large number of low income students, as defined by the percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch.
