Burr-Brown Introduces Simultaneous Sampling, 12-Bit ADCs for Motor Control Systems.

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1999--Burr-Brown Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ

) today announced two 12-bit, dual 500kHz analog-to-digital converters, the ADS7861 (serial interface) and the ADS7862 (parallel interface). Both devices feature four fully differential input channels grouped into two pairs for high speed, simultaneous sampling signal acquisition in motor control and power management applications.

In a three-phase motor control system, for example, the ADS7861 and ADS7862's four-channel/two-pair input gives the designer the ability to monitor and adjust two critical variables, such as voltage and current, at the same time. This provides the designer more control over the motor, resulting in less maintenance and longer life.

Additionally, when operating these devices from a common reference, the simultaneous sampling of the voltage and current provides the opportunity to double the data conversion throughput rate--an effective sampling rate of 1MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. .

"With the ADS7861 and ADS7862, we provide a high-speed, low-cost motor control solution that samples twice as fast as the competition, while dissipating only 40mW of power," said Wayne Talley, strategic marketing engineer at Burr-Brown. "The ability to have differential input and simultaneous sampling at a 500kHz rate hits the target for motor control systems."

The ADS7861's serial interface makes the device ideal for applications requiring small component size by eliminating the need for multiple output lines. If output speed is an issue, the ADS7862 provides all the features and performance of the ADS7861 with a parallel interface.

Both devices feature four input channels, fully differential inputs, 2 micro-seconds total throughput, 500kHz sampling rate on a single channel, and low power (40mW).

and priced from $6.35 in 1,000 piece quantities; the ADS7862 comes in a 32-lead TQFP See QFP.  and is priced from $7.55 in 1,000s. Delivery is from stock.
