) today announced the OPA OPA: see Office of Price Administration. 687, a high gain stable, voltage feedback operational amplifier operational amplifier, amplifier whose output voltage is proportional to the negative of its input voltage and that boosts the amplitude of an input signal many times, i.e., has a very high gain.  designed for driving high performance analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) in communications and medical imaging applications.

The high performance OPA687 combines high bandwidth and large signal performance with ultra-low distortion and input noise making it well suited for a wide range of applications. It is ideal for ultra-low distortion requirements as the ADC (1) See A/D converter.

driver for digital basestations and secure communications. Wideband, high sensitivity optical receivers will also benefit from its low noise and high gain bandwidth.

With the move to 12- and 14-bit, high-resolution signal converters in communication basestations, the OPA687 provides the necessary low distortion to maintain signal integrity in these demanding digital converter applications. In addition, where power savings is critical, it features an optional power down pin that disables the amplifier and decreases the quiescent current to only 1% (2mW) of its powered-up value.

"The OPA687's combinations of features expands the envelope of Burr-Brown's ultra-high dynamic range op amp capability," said Michael Steffes, strategic marketing engineer at Burr-Brown. "This family of products provides a broad range of gain values and the lowest harmonic distortion In communications, unwanted frequencies that are generated as multiples of the original frequency due to irregularities in the transmission line. In audio amplifiers, harmonic distortion comes from non-uniform operation (non-linearity) in the amplifier circuits. See harmonic.  on the market."

estimates from ICE Corporation, the high-speed amplifier market will exceed revenues of $300 million in 1998 and grow 16% annually through the year 2000.

The OPA687 features 3.8GHz Gain Bandwidth Product, 0.95nV/root(Hz) input voltage noise, -95dBc distortion (5MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ), 900V/micro-second slew rate, and is specified for operation on +/-5V power supplies. It is guaranteed stable down to gains of +12 but can be applied at lower gains using external compensation.

The OPA687 is priced from $3.49 in 1,000 piece quantities and packaged in an 8-pin SO-8 and a SOT23-6. Delivery is from stock. About Burr-Brown
