115 and XTR116, designed for industrial sensor and signal acquisition systems.

The XTR115 and XTR116 target basic 4-20mA current loop applications including smart transmitters where sensor signals are processed with microcontrollers when electrical power is not available at the sensor site. They are also well suited for a surprising variety of other high volume applications, such as remote signaling from a switch contact or simple variable resistor in, for example, an air duct or liquid level sensor The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject matter.

.

A 4-20mA current-loop transmitter provides accurate transmission of analog signals from sensors (used to monitor physical parameters in industrial processes such as temperature and pressure) to remotely located measurement equipment. The sensor signal is amplified, linearized, and transmitted in the form of current (no power supply required at the transmitter site). 4-20mA current loops are not affected by line resistance and are much more immune to electrical interference.

&uot;The XTR115 and XTR116 offer an attractive combination of low price, low quiescent current, accuracy and versatility,&uot; said John Brown, strategic marketing engineer at Burr-Brown. &uot;A system designer will be challenged to achieve equivalent performance and functionality at such a low cost using discrete circuitry.&uot;

Brown added: &uot;These integrated circuits Integrated circuits

Miniature electronic circuits produced within and upon a single semiconductor crystal, usually silicon. Integrated circuits range in complexity from simple logic circuits and amplifiers, about 1/20 in. (1.
 solve the difficult design problem of interfacing high loop supply voltage (up to 36V) to low-level input circuitry (5V).&uot;

Technical Detail

The devices feature low quiescent current (200 micro-amps), wide loop supply range (7.5V to 36V), 5V regulator for powering external circuitry, precision voltage reference A voltage reference is an electronic device (circuit or component) that produces a fixed (constant) voltage irrespective of the loading on the device, power supply variation and temperature.  for sensor excitation (XTR115 = 2.5V; XTR116 = 4.096V), and low span error (0.05%). A current return pin senses any current used in external circuitry to assure an accurate control of the output current.

The XTR115 and XTR116 are priced from $0.95 in 1,000 piece quantities and packaged in an SO-8. Delivery is from stock. Both are specified for operation over the -40C to +85C industrial temperature range.
